Are you preparing for a health-related career, or planning to study in the health sciences? Perhaps you're just keen to learn more about the wonders of the human body? Our bodies are amazing but complex biological machines. This course will provide you with an outstanding foundation of knowledge in human anatomy and physiology.

You will gain a broad understanding of the relationships between normal structure and function in human cells and tissues, both in health and disease. The properties of the four main types of tissue in the body - epithelial, connective, muscular and nervous - will also be clearly explained.

The course employs a variety of engaging learning methods, including short videos, animations, interactive activities and integrated quizzes to guide you through key concepts, and make learning relevant.

He has been the coordinator of first year Human Biology in the Bachelor of Health Sciences (BHlthSc) program for over 10 years. In 2013, Mario received an Australian Office for Learning and Teaching (OLT) Citation, the University of Adelaide Vice-Chancellor and President’s Award, the Stephen Cole the Elder Award, and was admitted into the global Apple Distinguished Educator program for his innovative use of technology to improve student learning.

Rachel Gibson is the coordinator of first year Biology for Nursing Practice 1 in the Bachelor of Nursing program, University of Adelaide. She is also Head of the Gut Microbiome Group which investigates the toxic effects of chemotherapy on the gut bacterial populations of cancer patients. In 2011, Rachel was the recipient of a Faculty of Health Sciences Executive Dean’s Award for Excellence in Teaching.

Sophie Karanicolas is the Assistant Dean for Learning and Teaching in the School of Dentistry at the University of Adelaide and has taught first year Human Biology for over 20 years. Sophie’s teaching success has been recognised via an OLT Award for Teaching Excellence in 2013, University of Adelaide Vice Chancellor’s Medal for Excellence in Education and the Stephen Cole the Elder Award in 2011, an Australian Learning and Teaching Council Citation in 2010, and several Vocational Education and Training teaching awards including the TAFESA Gold Medal Award in 2004.

Catherine Snelling is the coordinator of first year Human Biology in the Bachelor of Oral Health at the School of Dentistry. Catherine is passionate about sharing her fascination with the human body with her students, and believes that a deep understanding of the key concepts is critical to developing mastery of the subject. Her teaching efforts have been recognised via an OLT Award for Teaching Excellence in 2013, University of Adelaide Vice Chancellor’s Medal for Excellence in Education and the Stephen Cole the Elder Award in 2011 and an Australian Learning and Teaching Council Citation in 2010.

Dr Femke Buisman-Pijlman is a leader in Addiction Studies and online education. She is an award-winning teacher and researcher in the Discipline of Pharmacology at the University of Adelaide, where she is a Senior Lecturer Addiction Studies and head of the Behavioural Neuroscience lab. As program leader of the International Programme in Addiction Studies, and other postgraduate degrees in Alcohol and Drug Studies, she has taught the biology of addiction and treatment options to a wide range of students. Femke is also the convenor of the major in Addiction and Mental Health which has recently been introduced to the Bachelor of Health and Medical Sciences at the University of Adelaide.

Femke has extensive experience teaching fully online programs to professionals in the field from all around the world. She has extensive experience working in the interdisciplinary field of addiction. Currently, Femke’s research is demonstrating how early life experiences affect behaviour and susceptibility to addiction. Since 2008, Femke has been Graduate Affiliate Faculty at Virginia Commonwealth University. Femke is postgraduate coordinator for Pharmacology and passionate about engaging kids in neuroscience.
