Every day, we see concrete used all around us – to build our houses, offices, schools, bridges, and infrastructure. But few people actually understand what gives concrete its strength, resistance, and utility.

The aim of this course is to offer basic cement chemistry to practitioners, as well as new students in the fields of chemistry and engineering.

You will learn how cement is made and hydrated, as well as the environmental and economical benefits it offers. You’ll learn to test your samples in isocalorimetry in order to track the hydration and to prepare and observe samples by scanning electron microscopy. In the last two weeks of the course, you will also learn how X-ray diffraction works and how to apply it to cements.

Because the course is designed for beginning students, it’s not necessary to have a cement background, however a bachelor degree in Materials Science or knowledge in chemistry, physics and crystallography will help. This course starts with basics of cement, and progressively covers the latest advances in the understanding of cement hydration. This course lasts 6 weeks, during which you can take theoretical courses and tutorials to test the cement in the laboratory.

Director of the Laboratory of Construction Materials and Full Professor at Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne, Karen Scrivener works at the interface between academic research and industrial applications in the cement industry. Her academic studies of microscopic structure have considerably advanced the understanding of the behaviour of cementitious materials, in particular with regard to the deterioration of concrete. She is a founder of the Nanocem network, which in ten years has grown to include 11 industrial partners and 22 academic partners. This partnership, the only one of its kind, has transformed the landscape of research into cement matter and materials. The publications of Prof. Scrivener are frequently cited, amounting to an H-index of 26. Her work has already been recognised with several prizes including the prize and the Della Roy Lecture Award from the American Ceramic Society. Karen Scrivener has been elected as a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering for her remarkable contribution to the domain of engineering. She is one of 59 scientists to be honoured in 2014.

Ruben Snellings, PhD, is a researcher at the Sustainable Materials Management Unit of VITO, the Flemish Institute of Technological Research in Belgium. He earned an MSc and PhD in geology at KU Leuven, Belgium, and was formerly a postdoc at the Magnel Laboratory for Concrete Research at UGent in Belgium and a Marie Curie Fellow at Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne in Switzerland. He is a member of RILEM, active in several Technical Committees. His research focusses on low-CO2 cements and concrete and new, alternative construction materials

Aurélie Favier, Ph.D., is a postdoctoral researcher at the Laboratory of Building Materials of the Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne, Switzerland. She obtained an MSc in Materials Chemistry at Montpellier 2 University and Evry Val d’ Essonne and a PhD in Material Sciences from IFSTTAR (formerly Laboratoire des Ponts et Chaussées) in France. His research focuses on the rheology, durability and sustainability of low-CO2 cements and geopolymers. She is the Project Manager of MOOC Cement Chemistry and Sustainable Cementitious Materials.

Dr. Xuerun LI received his PhD degree in Material Science from Nanjing Tech University in 2014 working on cement clinker and ye'elimite cement. He is now doing postdoc research at LMC of EPFL. His current research interests are XRD quantitative analysis (Rietveld method) applied in cementitious materials, alite synthesis and hydration study, and reactivity test for SCMs.

He is recently doing his PhD project on hydration of Limestone Calcined Clays Cement in the Laboratory of Construction Materials, EPFL, Switzerland. His main research area is hydration, microstructure and reactivity assessment of calcined clays as Supplementary Cementitious Materials.

She is recently doing her PhD project, prediction and simulation of autogenous shrinkage, in the Laboratory of Construction Materials, EPFL, Switzerland. Her main research area is hydration, microstructure and mechanical properties of cementitious materials, especially early-age deformation and durability.
